Meet Douglas — a resilient, hilarious, loving boy who is looking for a very special forever home. Douglas is the kind of dog who leaves an impression on everyone he meets. He absolutely lives for his people, chasing his favorite ball, and making everyone laugh with his signature “happy screams” — excited howls and dramatic yelps that are pure Douglas. He has a huge personality, a gentle heart, and so much love to give. Sadly, on July 21, 2025, after a freak accident while playing, Douglas suffered a serious spinal injury that left his back legs paralyzed. Despite everything he has gone through, he has regained approximately 60-70% function in his back legs and continues to full of life. Making the decision to rehome him has been devastating for us, but we know he deserves a home with the consistency, time, and specialized care he needs to truly thrive. Douglas requires: • Bladder expression 3–5 times per day • Bowel expression approximately 3 times per day (We are completely willing to teach and support his future family through this process.) He has been completing ongoing hydrotherapy and rehabilitation to maintain the best quality of life possible. His hydrotherapy program costs approximately $550 for 5 sessions, and he currently attends every two weeks. His improvement so far has been incredible, and while there is still hope that he could regain further mobility — even potentially full mobility — the long-term outcome remains unknown. What a typical day looks like: One of us wakes up anywhere from 530am – 8am (on weekends). We take him down our stairs (he’s great walking down stairs, but can’t go up them himself) and express his bladder, either outside or with him lying down into a pee pad. We then feed him his kibble and medication. After he’s done eating we help him poo. We try to be with him as much a possible during work hours, but depending on our day that’s not always the case. He usually will come to work with one of us but, he can, and has been left at home with a male dog diaper on for anywhere from 4-6 hours with no accidents. Once home we take him outside, where he can pee on his own at the park, then we help him poo again. Dinner is anywhere from 5pm-6pm, with medication given at the same time. We have to then express his bladder and help him poo one more time before bed. Douglas would thrive in: • A home where someone works from home, has a flexible schedule, or can bring him to work • A space with easy outdoor access and soft ground/grass where he can comfortably move around • A calm, patient, loving environment with a steady routine • A home with other calm furry companions, as he absolutely loves having animal friends around and loves to play with other dogs • A home without high puppy energy, as it can frustrate and overwhelm him • A family with older children or calm kids, as he has become a little grumpier with age and prefers gentler energy Douglas still has so much joy and life in him. He loves attention, cuddles, adventures, being included in everyday life, and of course — his ball. His disability does not define him. He is still an incredibly happy dog who deserves the chance to continue living a full and loved life. Douglas will come with everything he needs, including: • His wheelchair • Help-’Em-Up harness • Diapers and care supplies • Mobility aids and accessories • Additional supplies to help make his transition as smooth as possible We are committed to finding the absolute right home for Douglas — a family who will love him deeply and give him the stability and care he deserves. We are in no rush and are fully prepared to keep Douglas with us until we find the PERFECT home for him.
