Volunteer at BC Pet Shelters and Rescues

7 ways to help BC rescues without adopting. Direct application links per role.

Every BC rescue runs on volunteers. BC SPCA, VOKRA, Loved at Last, Victoria Humane Society, Heart and Soul — all of them depend on people who walk dogs, socialise cats, drive transport, foster, photograph, and handle admin. Most BC rescues have specific gaps right now: weekday dog walking, Vancouver Island ferry transport drivers, and adoption event staff are perennially short.

Below are the most common volunteer roles, grouped by what kind of involvement you have time for. Each role links directly to the application page at the relevant rescue. If you're not sure which role fits, BC SPCA's volunteer orientation is the most beginner-friendly path — they place you based on what you're good at.

Dog Walker

3 rescues need this

Walk shelter dogs on a rotating schedule to give them exercise, socialisation, and time out of kennels. Most BC SPCA branches need weekday walkers especially.

Who fits: Physically able, comfortable with leashed dogs of various sizes

Cat Socialiser

3 rescues need this

Spend time with shelter cats and kittens to keep them socialised, friendly, and adoptable. Especially valuable during kitten season (April through October).

Who fits: Comfortable with cats; patience for shy or fearful kittens

Transport Driver

3 rescues need this

Drive dogs and cats from northern BC, remote First Nations communities, or out-of-province intake to Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island foster homes. Vancouver Island ferry runs are especially needed.

Who fits: Reliable vehicle, valid driver's licence, flexible weekend availability

Foster Home

1 rescue need this

Provide a temporary home for a dog or cat until they are adopted. Every BC rescue covers food, supplies, and 100% of vet care. The single highest-impact volunteer role.

Who fits: Stable home, time for daily care, willing to coordinate with the rescue

Adoption Event Volunteer

3 rescues need this

Staff weekend adoption events at Vancouver, Victoria, and Lower Mainland venues. Help with set-up, handling animals, answering adopter questions, and processing applications.

Who fits: Comfortable with public, can commit to 3 to 5 hour shifts

Photographer

3 rescues need this

Take adoption photos of dogs and cats. Good photos noticeably speed up adoption — most BC rescues operate on volunteer-shot listings and would welcome polished images.

Who fits: Camera (DSLR or mirrorless), basic editing skills, weekend availability

Remote / Admin

3 rescues need this

Help with data entry, social media, donor outreach, grant writing, website updates, or adopter follow-up. Done from home on your schedule.

Who fits: Computer access, time for 2 to 5 hours a week

Volunteering at BC Rescues — FAQ

What's the time commitment for BC rescue volunteering?

Varies by role and rescue. Most BC SPCA branches need a 3-month commitment with weekly shifts (2 to 4 hours each). Foster commitments range 2 weeks to 3 months. Remote admin can be 1 hour a week. Transport drivers commit per trip, not ongoing. Pick a role that fits your actual schedule — rescues much prefer reliable monthly volunteers over enthusiastic flake-outs.

Do I need experience with animals to volunteer?

No for most roles. Dog walking, transport, photography, and admin all welcome new volunteers. Cat socialising and foster placements with behavioural cases usually want some experience or training. BC SPCA runs free orientation for every new volunteer.

Can I volunteer remotely from outside BC?

Limited remote roles exist (social media, donor outreach, grant writing) but most BC rescues prefer local volunteers because the impact is hands-on. If you want to help BC rescues from elsewhere, donations and transport coordination are the biggest needs.

What if I can't commit regularly?

Transport runs and adoption events are per-shift; you can sign up only when you're available. Foster sitting (covering a regular foster home for a weekend or vacation) is another way to help without an ongoing commitment.
