Adopting a tabby in Saskatchewan

Tabby is a coat pattern, not a breed. The vast majority of cats in Saskatchewan rescue intake show some version of the tabby pattern, because the gene is dominant and common. SK adopters who search for "tabby" are usually after the look: bold stripes, a forehead M-mark, and the warm brown, orange, or grey colouration. The breed underneath is almost always domestic shorthair or domestic longhair.

The four tabby patterns

A tabby cat can show four distinct patterns. Mackerel tabbies have narrow vertical stripes, classic tabbies have bold swirled markings, spotted tabbies show round or oval spots in place of stripes, and ticked tabbies (the agouti pattern) have stripes only on the legs and face with a peppered body coat. All four show the trademark M on the forehead.

Colour ranges across brown, grey (often called silver tabby), orange (sometimes called marmalade or ginger), and cream. Orange tabbies are most often male, a result of how the orange colour gene is inherited. Female orange tabbies are uncommon but do exist.

Temperament is breed and individual, not pattern

Tabby is the most common cat look in SK rescue. The things adopters should plan for:

• Personality varies widely. Read foster notes, not pattern stereotypes.
• Domestic shorthairs make up most tabbies. Healthy, hardy, long-lived.
• Maine Coon crosses with tabby pattern are common and worth a look if size and laid-back temperament appeal.
• Indoor only, like every rescue cat in SK. Coyote and raptor pressure is real.
• Adoption fees are typically the same regardless of pattern; pattern does not change cost.
