People for Animal Wellbeing, the former Greater Moncton SPCA, is Atlantic Canada's largest animal shelter, and a big share of the 3,000-plus animals it takes in each year are cats. For adopters across greater Moncton, Dieppe, and Riverview, that means the widest cat selection in New Brunswick sits in one building.
LocalPetFinder is not a shelter. We pull the PAW cat listings into one searchable page and refresh them regularly. You apply through the shelter directly, browsing here is free, and we never add anything on top of the adoption fee.
New Brunswick kitten season runs roughly from late spring into fall, and at a high-volume shelter like PAW the summer months bring litter after litter through the door, often with their unspayed mothers. In winter the mix tips toward adult cats whose personalities are already settled.
A kitten is a guess you raise; an adult cat is a known quantity. Shelter staff can tell you which adults tolerate kids, dogs, and noise, because they have watched them do it. For a first-time cat owner or an apartment household, the adult is usually the easier win.
Moncton cats belong indoors, and local adopters figure this out quickly. Heavy snow, busy arterial roads, and the wooded edges around the city are all hard on a free-roaming cat, and indoor cats simply live longer. Plan for window perches, scratching posts, and vertical space before the cat arrives.
The adoption fee offsets medical work already done: typically the spay or neuter, core vaccinations, a microchip, deworming, and a health check before placement. That package costs far more at a clinic than the fee itself, which is why a "free" kitten from an online ad usually ends up the expensive option. Confirm the current fee and inclusions on each cat's listing.
A shelter handling thousands of intakes a year always has more cats than kennels, especially through kitten season. Every adoption opens space for the next arrival, and the fee funds its care.
You also adopt with real information. PAW staff have handled each cat daily and can describe its behaviour honestly, which no online seller can. That knowledge is what turns a gamble into a good match.
