Adopting a dog in Montreal

Montreal is the largest city in Quebec, and adoptable dogs here are scarcer than most newcomers to the process expect. The Montreal SPCA, the best-known organization on the island, carries a far shorter dog list than cat list at almost any moment, and the smaller foster-based groups place quietly through their own networks. When a dog genuinely suits your home, apply the same day rather than sleeping on it.

LocalPetFinder is not a shelter. We do not house animals and we do not process adoptions. We pull Montreal-area listings into one place and refresh them regularly, so what you see is close to what is genuinely available right now. You apply through the organization directly. The site is free and we never add a fee on top of the adoption cost.

One piece of context worth having before you start. Since 2015, article 898.1 of the Civil Code of Quebec has said that animals are not property but sentient beings with biological needs. That framing runs through how Quebec shelters operate. An adoption fee is not a purchase price, and an organization is free to decline an application that does not fit the animal in front of it.

July 1, moving day, and what it means for adopters now

July 1 is the moving date most of Quebec still organizes around, and for years shelters saw a wave of animals arrive in the days either side of it. That is no longer quite the picture. The Montreal SPCA reports that the July spike has flattened, not because fewer animals are surrendered but because surrenders now spread across the whole calendar, pushed by cost of living and by how few rentals accept pets.

For an adopter that changes something practical. There is no longer a best month to watch the listings. A dog that suits you can turn up in February as easily as in July, and it will go just as fast either way. Check regularly instead of waiting for summer, and be ready to apply when you see the right one.
