Adopting a Vizsla in New Brunswick

Vizslas are uncommon in New Brunswick rescue. They are Hungarian pointing gundogs, rust-coloured and lean, and they are known for two things: extraordinary stamina and an attachment to their people so intense the breed is commonly called a velcro dog.

Velcro is not an exaggeration

Vizslas want physical contact and proximity constantly, and they are genuinely prone to separation anxiety, more so than most breeds. A household out for long days is a poor match and this is the most common reason one reaches rescue. They are sensitive dogs that do badly with harsh handling.

The compensation is that they are affectionate, biddable and easy to train, which makes them rewarding for someone who is around. Crate training and a gradual approach to alone-time matter from the first week, and it is worth asking the foster exactly how long the dog currently copes.

Stamina, and a coat that offers nothing

This is a field gundog with real endurance, needing an hour or more of hard daily exercise plus mental work, indefinitely. Under-exercised Vizslas are destructive and cannot settle, and no amount of yard access substitutes for actual work.

The coat is short, single and provides almost no insulation, with very little body fat underneath. A Maritime winter needs a proper dog coat, and the exercise requirement does not pause for the weather, which is the practical difficulty. For health, ask about hips, eyes and epilepsy, which occurs in the breed.

What adopting a dog in New Brunswick actually involves

New Brunswick rescue runs through a small number of organisations rather than a dense network of breed-specific groups. P.A.W. in Moncton, the Saint John SPCA Animal Rescue and the Fredericton SPCA carry most of the intake, alongside foster-based groups such as Fulfilling Hearts that place province-wide. Expect an application and a meet rather than a same-day adoption, and expect to be asked about your housing, your hours and any other animals. Rescues here serve French and English families alike, so say which you would rather work in.

Two practical notes specific to this province. Specialist veterinary care means the Atlantic Veterinary College in Charlottetown for most of the Maritimes, which is a few hours from any of the three metros, so a condition needing a specialist is a drive rather than a cross-town trip. And the climate is harder on dogs than the temperature alone suggests: Bay of Fundy damp and coastal wind make a wet cold that thin-coated dogs feel badly, and road salt through a Maritime winter cracks paw pads.
