Coonhounds and hound crosses in Newfoundland
Newfoundland is the one province where hounds are genuinely part of the local dog culture rather than an import. Rabbit hunting with beagles and beagle crosses is a long-standing tradition across the island, and the province has more hound-type dogs per capita in rescue than almost anywhere else in Canada — Beagle Paws exists precisely because of it. A dog listed as a Coonhound here may be a true southern transport, or it may be a larger local hound cross whose parentage nobody can name.
The practical consequence is that hound temperament is well understood by Newfoundland fosters. Ask, and you will usually get a straight answer about whether a particular dog bays constantly, whether it has ever been indoors, and how it behaves when it hits a scent — which is far more useful than the breed label.
Island weather, and the trail problem
Two traits end most Coonhound adoptions, and neither is trainable away. The nose: a hound on a scent is not disobeying, it is doing the job it was bred for, and recall in that state is close to nonexistent. The voice: a bay is a carrying, resonant howl designed to be heard across a kilometre of bush. In a detached house on a large lot that is character. Through a shared wall it is the reason the dog comes back.
The island climate is manageable for a short-coated hound: wet rather than brutally cold, with a light coat sufficient for most of the winter. Wet is its own problem, though, and pendulous ears need drying and weekly checks or they will develop chronic infections. The bigger issue is terrain. A hound that picks up a rabbit trail on the Avalon will follow it across barrens and bog with no regard for the road it crosses, and there is a lot of open country to disappear into. Secure fencing and long-line work are the standard answer.

The rescues that most often list Coonhounds across the province are Beagle Paws, and St. John's Humane Services. For breed-specific background, the United Kennel Club is a useful reference.
