Burlington has two shelters that adopt out cats. The City's Burlington Animal Shelter at 2424 Industrial Street adopts by appointment (905-335-7777) and posts its animals on Petfinder. Burlington Humane Society, a no-kill shelter at 740 Griffith Court, takes walk-in adoptions Tuesday to Saturday once you have filled in an application.
LocalPetFinder is not a shelter and never charges adopters. The cats on this page come from the Hamilton/Burlington SPCA, whose shelter is in Hamilton, the Brant County SPCA in Brantford and owners rehoming a cat. Each card shows the city the cat is actually in.
A cat of any age from the City's Burlington Animal Shelter is $179.24, tax included, covering vaccinations, flea and deworming treatment, an exam with a local vet, a microchip and six weeks of insurance. Spay or neuter is not included in that fee. Other shelters set their own fees, so confirm the figure on the listing.
Burlington does not license cats, but every cat must be microchipped under the City's Animal Control By-law, and a cat may not roam off your property. A home may keep no more than four cats and dogs in total.
Cats that arrive at a rescue together are often placed together, and a bonded pair is frequently the easier adoption rather than the harder one. Two cats that already know each other decompress faster in a new home. Ask the shelter which pairs it has, and remember the four-pet household limit.
Cats decompress on their own timeline. The 3-3-3 guide applies here too: about three days to stop hiding, three weeks to trust a routine, three months to feel at home. Give a new cat a quiet room, predictable feeding and time.
For an emergency, the Burlington Veterinary Emergency & Referral Hospital at 775 Woodview Road is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, on 905-637-8111.
