Burnaby's shelter is the City of Burnaby Community Animal Centre, operated by the BC SPCA. It is temporarily at 6229 Laurel Street, open 9:30 am to 4:30 pm Wednesday to Sunday, 604-291-7201, and its adoptable cats are posted on the BC SPCA's own adoption site. Check that page for current hours and animals before you go.
LocalPetFinder is not a shelter and never charges adopters. The cats on this page are current listings from Lower Mainland rescues, including the BC SPCA, Heart and Soul Dog and Cat Rescue and the Langley Animal Protection Society, along with cats listed by owners who are rehoming them. BC SPCA cats carry a Vancouver label whichever centre holds them, and each card shows the city the cat is actually in, so a meet-and-greet may mean a short drive.
Each rescue sets its own adoption fee and publishes it with the cat, and the BC SPCA does the same on its adoption site, so confirm the figure on the listing itself. The fee normally covers spay or neuter, vaccinations and a microchip, which is why a rescue cat usually costs less overall than a free kitten that has had none of that.
Burnaby's licence page covers dogs only, so there is no cat licence to buy. The City's Animal Control Bylaw still applies to cats, so read it if you are planning an outdoor cat.
Schedule E of the City's Business Licence Bylaw, added in 2018, bars pet stores from selling dogs or cats. A store may only adopt out cats and dogs placed there by a municipal shelter or a registered rescue, at a fee capped at its costs. A kitten advertised for sale in Burnaby comes from a private seller or a breeder. Shelter and rescue cats usually arrive already spayed or neutered, vaccinated and microchipped, and the people who cared for them can tell you how each cat gets along with kids, dogs and other cats.
Cats that arrive at a rescue together are often placed together, and a bonded pair is frequently the easier adoption rather than the harder one. Two cats that already know each other decompress faster in a new home, keep each other company through a long workday, and are often cheaper to adopt as a pair. Ask the rescue which pairs it has.
Cats decompress on their own timeline. The 3-3-3 guide applies here too: about three days to stop hiding, three weeks to trust a routine, three months to feel at home. A cat that hides under the bed for the first few days is normal. Give it a quiet room, predictable feeding and time, and most come out a different animal within a month.
Most Lower Mainland rescues place cats as indoor-only. Coyotes live across Metro Vancouver, including the Burnaby Mountain and Deer Lake trails, and the arterial roads through Burnaby carry heavy traffic, so an indoor cat lives a longer, safer life.
