What is the best breed for a first-time owner?▼

A settled four-year-old mixed breed that a foster home can describe in detail is a safer first dog than a puppy of any breed on any recommended list.

Usually not, and it is the most common first-timer mistake. A puppy means months of house training, night waking, chewing, and a socialization window you only get once. An adult dog arrives with its temperament visible and often with the hard parts already done. Puppies are appealing precisely because they hide the information you most need.
