Non-Shedding Dogs for Adoption in Canada

141 low-shedding rescue dogs available now from shelters across Canada.

Dogs that don't shed, available across Canada. Every dog below is a breed or cross that sheds very little. No dog is completely non-shedding, and the low-shedding breeds split into two groups with very different upkeep: short-coated ones that need almost no grooming, and coat-holding ones like Poodles and Doodles that need a professional groom every four to eight weeks. Our guide to dogs that don't shed explains which is which before you choose.

Non-Shedding Dog Adoption FAQ

Tap a question to expand

Is a hypoallergenic dog the same as a non-shedding dog?
Not quite, and the difference matters if you have allergies. Shedding is about hair; allergies are about a protein in the dog's dander and saliva. Low-shedding breeds spread less of that protein around your home, which is why they are called hypoallergenic, but no breed produces none of it. Spend time with the individual dog before you commit, because reactions vary dog to dog even inside one breed.
Are there dogs that don't shed at all?
No dog is completely non-shedding, but 37 breeds shed so little you will rarely find hair on your clothes. Every listing on this page is a dog whose breed falls into that group.
Do non-shedding dogs need more grooming?
Usually yes. Coat-holding breeds like Poodles, Doodles, Bichons and Shih Tzus do not drop hair, so the coat keeps growing and mats against itself, which means professional grooming every four to eight weeks. Short-coated low shedders avoid that entirely.
How do I adopt one of these dogs?
Apply directly through the rescue that has the dog. LocalPetFinder is a listings aggregator, not a shelter: we pull adoptable dogs from rescues across Canada into one place and refresh them regularly, but the application, meet-and-greet and adoption all happen through the rescue.
