Adopting an Olde English Bulldogge in Manitoba

The Olde English Bulldogge is a modern rebred bulldog, bred to be more athletic and longer in the muzzle than the classic English Bulldog while keeping that thick, muscular bulldog look. Summer is the bigger health risk. Manitoba summers are hot and humid, regularly hitting 32 degrees with a brutal humidex, and the bulldogge is still somewhat brachycephalic. The rebred longer muzzle helps compared to an English Bulldog, but it does not make them safe in the heat. They struggle to cool themselves when it is humid, so you walk early morning or late evening, never midday, and you watch hard for heavy panting. The Olde English Bulldogge was specifically bred to be healthier than the English Bulldog, and many are, but you still ask. Find out how the dog breathes after activity and in the heat, whether there is any history of skin or fold infections, and how the hips and joints have held up. Ask about allergies and any eye issues. A foster who has lived with the dog for a few weeks can tell you the honest answer.

What it is like to live with one

Olde English Bulldogges are affectionate, people-focused dogs that want to be near their family. They are also powerful and need structure, training, and early socialisation to be good neighbours.

• Strong and muscular. Leash training matters early, before they outweigh your ability to hold them.
• Can be dog-selective. Many do best as the only dog or with careful introductions.
• Goofy and affectionate at home once their needs are met.
• Needs training and socialisation. This is not a hands-off breed.
