What the short legs mean in practice

A Munchkin moves well and plays normally, but cannot jump the way an ordinary cat does. That changes the furniture: ramps or steps up to favourite perches, litter boxes with a low entry, and food and water at floor level. Vertical territory still matters to a cat, so build it in stages the cat can actually climb rather than expecting a leap.

Ask about the spine and joints specifically. Lordosis, an inward curve of the spine, and pectus excavatum, a sunken chest, are both associated with the trait, and arthritis can appear earlier than in a typical cat. A vet check early in the adoption is worth arranging, and keeping the cat lean takes real load off the joints.
