Norwegian Forest Cats are large, heavily coated and built for a northern climate, which makes them one of the few breeds genuinely suited to a Maritime winter. They are calm, independent by pedigree-cat standards, and strong climbers.

The coat is the commitment

The double coat is dense and water-resistant with a woolly undercoat, and it mats if neglected, particularly behind the ears, in the armpits and along the trunk. Brushing a few times a week is the baseline, and the spring moult is dramatic: expect a period where the undercoat comes out in quantity. Never shave the coat, since it regulates temperature both ways. Damp coastal air makes proper drying after any soaking more important than it would be inland.

They are large and strong climbers, so vertical territory is not optional: a sturdy tall tree that will hold a heavy cat, and shelves it can reach in stages. For health, ask about hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, hip dysplasia, which occurs unusually in a cat and is linked to size, and glycogen storage disease type IV, which is testable.
