What an American Bully actually is
The American Bully is a young breed. It was developed in the United States through the 1980s and 1990s from the American Pit Bull Terrier crossed with bulldog-type dogs, and the United Kennel Club recognised it in 2013. It is not recognised by the Canadian Kennel Club or the American Kennel Club. That recent, mixed origin is exactly why the breed is so often confused with the dogs it came from.
Four varieties are generally recognised, and they are separated by height and build rather than by temperament: Pocket, Standard, Classic and XL. A Pocket sits under about 17 inches at the shoulder while an XL runs well over 20, so a single weight range for the breed is nearly meaningless. Read the individual dog, not the label.
Not a Pit Bull, and not an American Bulldog
These three are routinely mislabelled as each other in rescue, and the distinction matters more here than for most breeds. The American Bully was bred to be shorter, wider and heavier-boned than the American Pit Bull Terrier, with the working drive deliberately reduced in favour of a companion temperament. The American Bulldog is a different lineage again, a taller farm and catch dog.
Almost every bully-type dog in Canadian rescue arrives with a breed label that a staff member assigned by eye, and visual breed identification is unreliable. Treat the label on any listing, including the ones on this page, as a starting point rather than a fact, and ask the foster what the dog is actually like.
Adopting rather than buying
American Bullies are among the most heavily marketed dogs in Canada. Breeder and online-seller prices commonly run into the thousands, with XL and so-called exotic lines advertised highest. A rescue adoption fee is a small fraction of that and already covers spay or neuter, vaccination and a microchip.
There is a second reason to adopt rather than buy this particular breed, and it is legal rather than financial. A dog bought into a municipality that prohibits the type by appearance is a serious problem to unwind, and the seller will not help you. Read the legal section on this page first, whichever route you take.
Ontario restricts pit bull type dogs, and appearance is what decides it
This is the section Ontario adopters need to read before anything else. The Dog Owners Liability Act restricts pit bull type dogs province-wide. The Act names the American Pit Bull Terrier, the Staffordshire Bull Terrier and the American Staffordshire Terrier, and it extends to dogs whose appearance and physical characteristics are substantially similar to those breeds.
The American Bully is not named in the Act, and it is a separate breed. That does not settle the question, because the restriction turns on appearance rather than on pedigree, and the American Bully was developed from the American Pit Bull Terrier and shares much of its build. A dog can therefore be caught by the appearance test regardless of what its paperwork says. Ontario rescues are well used to this and will tell you how a specific dog has been assessed. Ask them directly, get the assessment on the file, and take legal advice rather than relying on the breed label if there is any doubt.
