Adopting a dog on Prince Edward Island

PEI is the smallest province in Canada and it has one animal shelter: the PEI Humane Society in Charlottetown. That makes adopting here simpler than almost anywhere else in the country. There is no long list of rescues to check and no risk of missing one, because there is only the one to check.

It also means dog listings are thin and move fast. The shelter usually has a handful of dogs at a time and far more cats, so if you are set on a dog it is worth setting up an alert rather than checking back and hoping. Cats are the opposite story: there are almost always plenty.

Anyone outside Charlottetown is still in range. Summerside is about an hour west, and no part of the island is more than a couple of hours from the shelter, so the whole province realistically adopts from the same place.

What to expect from the process

Adoption runs through an application rather than a first-come queue. You apply for a specific animal by name, the shelter reviews applications, and only successful applicants are contacted. Applying for one dog and not being chosen does not stop you applying for another.

Plan for a wait. With one shelter serving the whole island, popular dogs draw a lot of applications, and the shelter is open about only being able to contact the people it moves forward with.

Veterinary care on the island

PEI is unusual in having the Atlantic Veterinary College at UPEI in Charlottetown, the referral teaching hospital for the Maritimes. For a newly adopted dog with something complicated going on, specialist care is on the island rather than a ferry ride away, which is not something most provinces this size can say.
