How to Foster a Dog in Calgary

The most impactful thing you can do for Calgary rescue dogs — without a lifetime commitment

7 min read · Mar 29, 2026

Fostering a dog means providing a temporary home while a rescue organization finds the dog a permanent family. It is, without exaggeration, the single most impactful thing you can do for Calgary's rescue community. Every foster home that opens up saves a life — it frees a spot for another dog to be pulled from a high-risk situation.

Most of Calgary's rescue organizations are foster-based, meaning they do not have a physical shelter building. Dogs live with volunteer foster families until adopted. Without fosters, these rescues simply cannot operate. The need is constant and urgent — especially for families willing to foster larger breeds, dogs with medical needs, or puppies requiring frequent feedings.

The best part? Fostering costs you nothing. Rescues cover food, veterinary care, medications, and supplies. You provide the home, the time, and the love. And if you fall in love with your foster dog, most rescues are happy to let you adopt — a common outcome affectionately called a "foster fail."

What the Rescue Covers

Veterinary Care

All vet visits, medications, surgeries, and emergency care. You transport, they pay.

Food & Supplies

Most rescues provide food, crate, leash, and bowls. Some give you a starter kit on day one.

Training Support

Behavioural guidance and access to trainers if your foster dog needs help with specific issues.

Adoption Marketing

The rescue handles photos, listings, applications, and meet-and-greets. Your job is to love the dog.

What to Expect as a Foster

The First Few Days

Your foster dog may be anxious, shut down, or overly excited. This is normal. Follow the 3-3-3 rule — give them 3 days to decompress, 3 weeks to settle, and 3 months to fully trust.

Your Responsibilities

Feed, walk, and provide basic care. Report any health or behavioural concerns to the rescue. Take photos and notes about the dog's personality — this helps with adoption listings. Transport to vet appointments as needed.

When They Get Adopted

Saying goodbye is the hardest part. But knowing you saved a life — and can save another by fostering again — makes it worthwhile. Most experienced fosters describe it as bittersweet but deeply rewarding.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to pay for anything when fostering a dog?

No. Most Calgary rescues cover all costs including food, veterinary care, medications, and supplies. You provide the home, time, and love. Some fosters choose to buy extra treats or toys, but this is not required.

How long does fostering a dog last?

Foster periods vary from two weeks to several months, depending on the dog and the rescue. Most Calgary rescues allow you to specify your availability. Short-term emergency fosters (a few days) are also needed regularly.

Can I adopt my foster dog?

Yes, this is called a "foster fail" and rescues generally welcome it. If you bond with your foster dog and want to adopt, the rescue will typically waive or reduce the adoption fee.
