The honest version

French Bulldogs are one of the most popular breeds in Calgary and one of the most surrendered. The Reddit Frenchie community is unusually honest about the trade-offs: the medical reality is steep, the separation anxiety is real, Calgary summer heat is genuinely dangerous, and a $5,000 breeder puppy with no health testing is a worse bet than a $500 rescue. None of that means you should not get one. It means you should know going in whether your life fits the breed. This is the honest version, the 12-question self-assessment, and who matches what Frenchies actually need.

10 Honest Truths About Owning a French Bulldog

1. The medical cost is real, and recurring

Annual care $3,000 to $6,000. Lifetime $30,000 to $80,000+. BOAS surgery $5K to $10K. IVDD surgery $7K to $12K. Chronic allergies $1K to $3K/year. Pet insurance is not optional for this breed. The #1 reason Frenchies hit Calgary rescues is medical-cost surrender.

2. Calgary summer heat is genuinely dangerous

Frenchies cannot regulate body temperature like other breeds. Heat stroke kills in 10 to 20 minutes of overheating. Calgary summers have 4 to 6 weeks of dangerous heat (25C+). Air conditioning is essentially required. Walks before 8 a.m. and after 8 p.m. only during heat waves. Never leave in a car. This is the breed's #1 climate risk.

3. They are velcro to a fault

Frenchies bond intensely with one primary person and follow them everywhere; bathroom included. Working full-time without daycare or a walker is a real separation-anxiety risk. The breed is wonderful for retirees, work-from-home households, and families with a primary caregiver always present. It is harder for households where everyone is gone 9+ hours daily.

4. Housetraining is harder than most small breeds

Frenchie puppies take longer to housetrain than Labradors, Goldens, or even most other small breeds. Expect 8 to 12 months of housetraining work before reliability solidifies. Crate training accelerates this. Adult rescue Frenchies (2+ years) are typically already housetrained from their previous home: a major reason to adopt adult.

5. They snort, snore, fart, and gargle constantly

Brachycephalic anatomy means Frenchies make noise. Snoring loud enough to be heard from the next room, daytime snorts, occasional reverse sneezing, and famous gas. The noise is endearing once you love the breed. It can be a deal-breaker for light-sleeping households.

6. Backyard breeding has ruined many lines

The 2020 to 2022 Frenchie boom produced thousands of badly bred Frenchies with severe BOAS, hip issues, behaviour problems, and short lifespans. Adopt rescue or buy from CKC breeders meeting the 11-checkpoint criteria. AVOID Kijiji, Facebook, rare-colour marketing, and any breeder asking under $4,000 for a puppy.

7. They are not low-maintenance despite being small

Daily skin fold cleaning, daily tail pocket care, weekly ear cleaning, regular nail trims, allergy management, BOAS monitoring, and lifelong skin allergy management. Frenchies are high-maintenance dogs in a small-dog body.

8. Exercise needs are low, but specific

20 to 40 minutes daily, broken into 2 to 3 short walks. Frenchies cannot hike Banff, run with you, or play hard for long stretches. They are couch companions, not adventure dogs.

9. Lifespan is shorter than most small breeds

10 to 12 years average. Compared to Yorkies (13 to 16) or Chihuahuas (14 to 18), Frenchies have a shorter expected lifespan due to the medical issues. Lean weight, proactive BOAS management, allergy control, and lifelong vet care extend lifespan.

10. They are absolutely worth it for the right household

Frenchies are affectionate, funny, apartment-perfect, quiet, low-shedding, and loyal beyond reason. Owners who match the breed's needs almost never regret it. Most Frenchie regret is medical-cost surprise, not temperament mismatch. Informed adopters stay matched.

12-Question Self-Assessment

Answer honestly. If you can answer “yes” (or comfortably “mostly”) to at least 9 of 12, a Frenchie is probably a good fit. Below 7, reconsider; the breed needs may not match your lifestyle right now.

1. Do I have air conditioning at home for Calgary summer?

Heat stroke kills Frenchies in 10 to 20 minutes. AC is essentially required, not optional.

2. Can my budget absorb $3,000 to $6,000 annual care plus potential $5,000 to $12,000 surgery?

Cheap Frenchie ownership is a myth.

3. Am I able to provide daycare, a dog walker, or work-from-home flexibility if I work full-time?

Velcro breed = separation anxiety risk.

4. Will I commit to force-free training only (no e-collars, leash pops, yelling)?

Aversive methods damage Frenchies.

5. Can I tolerate constant snoring, snorting, and gas?

Brachycephalic anatomy means audible Frenchie all day.

6. Am I prepared for daily skin fold cleaning, tail pocket care, and ear maintenance?

High maintenance in a small body.

7. Do I want a couch companion, not an adventure dog?

Frenchies cannot hike, run, or play hard.

8. Am I patient with a velcro dog that follows me to the bathroom?

Normal Frenchie behaviour.

9. Are my kids 5+ years old, or am I willing to wait until they are?

Toddlers and Frenchies stress each other.

10. Did I confirm nobody in my household is allergic?

Frenchies are NOT hypoallergenic and trigger allergies.

11. Am I committed for 10 to 14 years through possible life changes (move, baby, job)?

Lifestyle-change surrenders are common.

12. Did I research the brachycephalic ethics debate and decide responsibly?

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Frenchies good apartment dogs?

Yes, arguably the best. 16-28 lbs, sleep 12-14 hrs/day, 20-40 min daily exercise, rarely bark. Most Calgary condo boards permit Frenchies. Catch: velcro temperament + working full-time is high anxiety risk.

Good with kids?

Kids 5+ yes, with supervision. NOT good with toddlers under 3. Adult rescue Frenchies with kid-friendly foster history are the safest path.

Can I own one working full-time?

Yes with planning. Daycare 1-3 days/wk or midday walker, crate training, morning exercise, enrichment. Without support, separation anxiety risk is high.

Calgary climate fit?

Challenging both ways. Winter: coat + booties below -10C. Summer: heat kills brachycephalics in 10-20 min. AC essentially required.

Stubborn or easy to train?

Famously stubborn but trainable with force-free + high-value treats. Housetraining is the #1 challenge (8-12 months for puppies). Adult rescues usually already housetrained.

Separation anxiety?

More than breed-average. Velcro temperament. 4-week prevention protocol from day 1, crate training, daycare 1-2 days/wk, enrichment.

Do Frenchies bark a lot?

No, one of the quietest breeds. Snort, snore, gargle, occasional alert bark.

Who should NOT get one?

9+ hrs work without support, no AC, toddler-only households, active hikers/runners, tight budgets, dominance trainers, low-maintenance preference.
