Adopting a cat in Kamloops

Cat adoption in Kamloops runs through the BC SPCA Kamloops Community Animal Centre on Tranquille Road. It is the main route into a home for cats across the city and the wider Thompson region.

Expect a short list, and plan around it

Kamloops is served by a single main shelter, so the cat list is genuinely small. Often only a few cats are listed at once, and a good match can be gone within days.

The practical approach is to set an alert rather than refresh the page. Kitten season runs late spring through summer and is when the list is longest. Outside that window, patience matters more than searching harder.

Cat registration in Kamloops is voluntary, and worth doing anyway

Kamloops does not require you to register a cat. Registration is voluntary and costs a one-time $40 for the cat's life, under the city's Animal Control Bylaw. There is also a two-cat-per-property limit.

The reason to register is what happens if your cat is picked up. An unregistered impounded cat can be held for as little as 48 hours before it may be sold or euthanised. Registration is the difference between a phone call and a deadline you never knew was running.

Vet care and spay or neuter in the city

Kamloops has a non-profit spay and neuter clinic operated by the BC SPCA on Tranquille Road, which has run a seasonal community spay and neuter program. If cost is the barrier to fixing a cat you already own, that is the first call to make.

For after-hours emergencies, Phases Veterinary Emergency Hospital on Summit Drive operates around the clock and sees cats. Worth saving the number before you need it rather than searching for it at 2 a.m.

Indoor cats in the Thompson valley

Kamloops rescues place cats as indoor-only. The city is dry and hot in summer and cold in winter, and the grassland benches around town carry coyotes and raptors that treat a roaming cat as prey.

  • Set up a quiet safe room before adoption day, with food, water, litter, and a hiding place.
  • Summer heat is the local risk indoors too. Shade, water, and airflow matter in a Kamloops July.
  • Vertical space and a window perch go a long way for a cat that will not be going outside.
  • Litter boxes go away from food and traffic. One per cat plus one is the standard.
