Devon Rexes have a fine, soft, wavy coat, oversized ears and a playful, people-focused temperament that many owners describe as closer to a small dog than a cat. They are commonly recommended to allergy households, which is only partly justified.

A thin coat means the same winter problem as a Sphynx

The coat is short, fine and sparse, sometimes with bald patches, and it insulates poorly. In a New Brunswick winter that makes them warmth-seekers in the same way a Sphynx is, drawn to radiators, sunny spots and laps, and a cold or damp house is a real welfare concern. They are indoor cats here without qualification. The coat is also delicate: over-bathing or harsh brushing damages it, so a soft cloth is usually better than a brush.

Health-wise, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy appears in the breed and screening is worth asking about. A hereditary myopathy affecting muscle strength has also been documented in Devon Rex lines. Ear wax builds up heavily, much as in the Sphynx, so regular cleaning is part of the routine.
