Adopting a cat in Oshawa

Oshawa is the largest city in Durham Region, close enough to Toronto that the whole Durham and Toronto rescue network is within a reasonable drive. LocalPetFinder gathers rescue cats and kittens from those rescues into one place and refreshes the listings regularly. Where Oshawa rescue cats come from

The City of Oshawa runs Oshawa Animal Services at 919 Farewell Street, which adopts out cats and kittens as well as dogs. Its current fees are $176.99 for a cat and $221.24 for a kitten six months or younger, plus HST, including spay or neuter, vaccines, deworming, flea treatment and a microchip. Its animals are posted on the City's own listings, linked from oshawa.ca.

Licensing your cat in Oshawa

Unlike many cities, Oshawa licenses cats as well as dogs under its Responsible Pet Owners By-law, and a rabies vaccination is required to buy the licence. A lifetime licence is $40 for a spayed or neutered cat and $60 if not, with a microchip; an annual licence is $25 or $50. The by-law allows up to six cats per household.

Two cats settle faster than one

Cats that arrive at a rescue together are often placed together, and a bonded pair is frequently the easier adoption rather than the harder one. Two cats that already know each other keep each other company while you are at work and settle into a new home faster.

The first weeks with a rescue cat

Cats decompress on their own timeline. The 3-3-3 guide applies here too: about three days to stop hiding, three weeks to trust a routine, three months to feel fully at home. Start with one quiet room, litter away from food, a scratching post and some vertical space.
