Why most orange cats are male
The orange gene sits on the X chromosome. A male cat has one X, so a single copy makes him orange, while a female needs the gene on both of her X chromosomes to come out fully orange rather than tortoiseshell or calico. The result is a well-documented skew: roughly four out of five orange cats are male. If you specifically want a female ginger, expect to wait, and expect the rescue to know it is unusual.
Almost every orange cat is also a tabby in some form. A solid orange cat with no markings at all is rare, because the gene that produces orange does not suppress the underlying tabby pattern the way solid black does. Look closely at a ginger in good light and you will nearly always find stripes, swirls or spots.
Personality claims, and what the evidence says
Orange cats have a reputation for being affectionate, food-motivated and a little daft. It is an appealing story and there is no solid evidence behind it. The most likely explanation for the stereotype is the sex skew: most orange cats are male, neutered male cats do tend to be somewhat more sociable and larger, and the colour gets the credit.
The practical takeaway is the same as for any colour. Judge the individual. Ask the foster how the cat greets strangers, how it handles being picked up, and what it does when the household is out. That tells you far more than the coat.
Living with a ginger in Ontario
Ordinary domestic shorthair care. Indoor living is the sensible default across the GTA and Ottawa given traffic and raccoon pressure, and a pale-coated cat that does spend time in a sunny window is worth watching for sunburn on the ear tips and nose over a humid Ontario summer.
Orange cats are food-motivated often enough that weight is the thing to watch. Free-feeding an indoor neutered male is the usual route to an overweight cat, and weight is the single biggest lever you control on long-term feline health. Ask the rescue what and how much the cat has been eating.
