Adopting a Westie in Ontario

Westies are uncommon in Ontario rescue intake. The Toronto Humane Society, the Ottawa Humane Society, City of Toronto Animal Services, and Ontario SPCA branches see them only occasionally, usually as 4 to 9 year old adults surrendered for ongoing allergy and skin costs the family could not absorb, or as seniors when an owner has died or moved into care. Set up an alert and apply within 24 to 48 hours of a dog appearing.

Senior Westies are often the easiest adoptions in the breed — settled, used to a routine, and frequently already on a skin and ear protocol with established veterinary care. A flexible adopter open to a senior or a Westie cross will find a match faster than one waiting for a young purebred.

Atopic dermatitis at very high prevalence

Westie atopic dermatitis is one of the best-documented breed-specific allergy patterns in veterinary literature, sometimes informally called "Westie itch." Most adult rescue Westies arrive with some skin or ear history in the file. Treatment is lifelong rather than curative: Apoquel or Cytopoint typically runs $80 to $200 per month at GTA and Ottawa primary practices, and the Ontario Veterinary College in Guelph dermatology service and VCA Canada specialty branches handle dogs whose flares are not controlled on baseline medication. Allergen-specific immunotherapy is an option for severe cases.

Craniomandibular osteopathy (CMO), a puppy-onset jaw bone disease that causes painful chewing and jaw swelling between 4 and 10 months of age, is breed-overrepresented in Westies. The condition usually resolves by 12 to 15 months but the puppy needs pain management through the worst months. Copper hepatopathy (a liver storage disease) and Addisonian-pattern endocrine issues are also overrepresented in the breed and worth flagging if the foster file mentions any liver enzyme or cortisol abnormality. Pet insurance taken out before any skin, liver, or endocrine flag is documented is strongly recommended.

Terrier traits, white-coat care, and GTA family fit

Westies are terriers — confident, vocal, prey-driven on squirrels and rabbits, and stubborn in training. They bark at every doorbell, hallway noise, and elevator ping, which creates real neighbour-conflict risk in a Toronto condo without structured anti-bark training from day one. They dig. They are escape-prone under fences. Otherwise the breed is genuinely well-suited to GTA family life: 15 to 22 lbs, moderate exercise needs at 45 to 60 minutes daily, and family-friendly with children when raised with respectful handling. The hard white double coat needs hand-stripping (the breed-standard method) or scissor cutting every 6 to 8 weeks at $60 to $90 per visit in the GTA. The white coat shows every Toronto street-salt streak — daily face and paw wipes through winter. Cold tolerance is good — the wiry double coat insulates well, though a light coat helps below minus 15. Humid GTA summers above 30°C are manageable with shade, water, and avoiding midday exercise.
