The first week sets the next year

How you handle the first week of Frenchie ownership shapes the next 10 to 12 years. The breed has specific needs from day 1 that other breeds do not: a harness instead of a collar, AC in summer, daily skin fold care, slow-feeder bowls for BOAS management, and pet insurance enrolled BEFORE the first vet visit. Get those right and your Frenchie settles fast. Miss them and you set up problems that take months to undo. This guide is the day-1-to-day-30 protocol from Calgary rescue volunteers and Frenchie-experienced vets.

The 3-3-3 Settling Timeline

Days 1 to 3

Shutdown

Quiet, may refuse food, sleep heavily, follow you to every room, seem strangely calm. This is overwhelm, not contentment. Many adopters mistake shutdown for “easy dog.” Day 4 to 7 the real personality starts emerging. Goal: low-pressure environment, minimal visitors, consistent feeding and potty schedule.

Weeks 1 to 3

Routine forming

Housetraining may regress. Separation anxiety often peaks at week 2 (especially after you return to work). Velcro behaviour intensifies. Goal: consistent schedule, gradual alone-time conditioning (start with 5 minutes, build up), positive reinforcement only.

Months 1 to 3

True personality

Real Frenchie emerges by month 2 to 3. Resource guarding may surface week 3 to 8 as comfort grows. Housetraining solidifies. Goal: maintain routine, address any behaviour issues with force-free trainers, complete first round of BOAS evaluation with vet.

First Week Brachycephalic Priorities

These are Frenchie-specific and easy to miss with a general-breed checklist:

  • NEVER a collar. Step-in harness only. Collars compress the trachea and worsen BOAS.
  • Slow-feeder bowl from meal 1. Frenchies inhale food which causes regurgitation and worsens airway obstruction.
  • AC running in summer. Heat stroke kills Frenchies in 10 to 20 minutes. No exceptions.
  • Daily skin fold cleaning. Face wrinkles, vulvar fold, tail pocket. Wipes plus dry. Skipping causes painful infections.
  • Crate is not optional. Helps housetraining, separation anxiety prevention, and post-surgery recovery later in life.
  • Pet insurance day 1. Before the wellness exam. Pre-existing conditions are the #1 insurance trap for Frenchies.
  • No dog parks for 4 to 8 weeks. Overwhelm plus disease risk during decompression.
  • No exercise above 25C. Walks before 8 a.m. and after 8 p.m. during Calgary heat waves.
