Adopting a calico in British Columbia

Calico is a tricolour coat pattern, not a breed. The classic calico has large patches of black, orange, and white, in any arrangement. Calicos are common in BC rescue and they share one distinctive trait: almost every calico is female. The genetics make male calicos rare and almost always sterile.

Almost always female

The genetics behind the calico pattern require the cat to have two X chromosomes, which means the standard biological outcome is female. A male calico is genetically unusual, almost always XXY, and almost always sterile. Roughly one in three thousand calicos is male.

For an adopter, this is not a problem. It just means that if you want a calico, you are almost certainly going to be adopting a female cat. The temperament has nothing to do with the colour pattern.

Personality varies, profile matters

There is a persistent reputation that calicos and tortoiseshells have "tortitude": strong personalities, independence, sass. Some calicos certainly fit; many do not. The pattern is determined by genetics that have nothing to do with temperament. The foster home's notes on each cat are the real guide.

Health and care

Calicos, as mixed-ancestry domestic cats, inherit a broad gene pool and tend to be healthy. There are no pattern-specific issues for the standard female calico. Male calicos, because of the XXY chromosome arrangement, often have additional health concerns and shorter lifespans. Most calicos live 15 to 20 years with good indoor care.

What calico cats are actually like to live with

Plan around the individual cat. General patterns:

• Wide temperament range. The tortitude reputation does not predict any individual cat.
• Almost always female. If you want a male, look at other patterns.
• Striking-looking. The tricolour pattern is unmistakable and photographs beautifully.
• Sturdy and adaptable. Mixed-ancestry calicos adjust to new homes well.
• Easy coats in shorthairs. Longhair calicos (sometimes called "torbie" if tabby-patterned underneath) need weekly brushing.
• Long-lived. Female mixed-ancestry calicos often reach their late teens with routine care.
• Indoor-only. As with every rescue cat in BC, indoor only.
