Cat Rescue Organizations in British Columbia

230 rescue cats from 9 BC organizations — Vancouver, Vancouver Island, Lower Mainland, and beyond

British Columbia's cat rescue community is one of the most active in Canada. VOKRA in Vancouver alone places hundreds of cats and kittens every year through its foster network, and Victoria Humane Society + CRD Animal Shelter handle most of Vancouver Island's intake. BC SPCA branches across the province add another major source of adoptable cats, especially during kitten season (April through October).

LocalPetFinder pulls adoptable cats from 9 BC rescues into one searchable platform. Instead of checking VOKRA, BC SPCA Vancouver, Victoria Humane Society, CRD, and Heart and Soul separately, browse them all here. Filter by age (kitten, adult, senior), coat length, indoor/outdoor preference, or bonded pair status, and apply directly through the rescue.

Most BC cat rescues outside of BC SPCA are foster-based, which means every cat has been living in a home and the rescue can tell you how it behaves with other cats, dogs, kids, and adults. This level of detail is rare with facility-based shelters and is one of the strongest reasons to adopt through a BC foster rescue.

How cat rescue adoption works in BC

Foster-based vs facility-based shelters

Foster-based rescues (VOKRA, Heart and Soul, Victoria Pet Adoption Society) place cats in volunteer homes until adoption. Facility-based shelters (BC SPCA branches, CRD Animal Shelter) house cats in a central location. Foster-based rescues give you detailed personality notes; facility-based shelters let you meet the cat in person right away. Both are good paths; the right one depends on whether you need to meet the cat physically before committing.

Adoption fees and what they cover

BC cat adoption fees ($150 to $400) include spay or neuter, age-appropriate vaccinations, microchip, and a vet check. Most rescues also include deworming, flea treatment, and any acute medical care the cat needed during intake. Adopting an unvetted cat off Craigslist and paying for vetting yourself usually costs $400 to $800, so adoption fees are actually subsidised.

Kitten season in BC

BC's mild climate stretches kitten season from April through October. During these months VOKRA, BC SPCA, and Victoria-area rescues take in hundreds of kittens. If you want a young kitten, summer is the time. If you want a calm, settled adult cat, winter inventory is usually higher in adult cats.

Want to help without adopting?

BC cat rescues run almost entirely on volunteer fosters. VOKRA specifically can't take in more cats than it has foster homes — every foster opens an intake slot. Volunteer opportunities at BC rescues include fostering, transport, adoption events, and photography (good cat photos noticeably speed up adoption).

Cat Rescue BC FAQ

Where can I find a rescue cat near me in BC?

LocalPetFinder aggregates adoptable cats from 9 BC cat rescues including VOKRA (Vancouver), Victoria Humane Society, CRD Animal Shelter, and Heart and Soul Dog and Cat Rescue. Browse them all on this page, filter by age, gender, or coat length, and apply directly through the rescue.

What is VOKRA and what makes it different?

VOKRA (Vancouver Orphan Kitten Rescue Association) is one of BC's largest cat rescues and is entirely foster-based with no central facility. Volunteer foster homes take in stray and abandoned cats and kittens, complete socialisation and medical care, then place them with adopters. Because every cat lives in a home, VOKRA can give you detailed personality notes that facility-based shelters often can't.

How much does it cost to adopt a cat in BC?

BC cat adoption fees typically range $150 to $400. Kittens are usually $250 to $400 (more vetting). Adult cats $150 to $300. Senior or special-needs cats are often $50 to $150 or fee-waived. All BC rescues include spay or neuter, vaccinations, microchip, and basic vet care — replacing those individually would cost $400 to $800.

Are there bonded pair cats in BC?

Yes — bonded pairs (two cats that have to be adopted together) are common in BC rescue inventory, especially from BC SPCA branches and Victoria-based rescues. Many BC rescues discount the fee for the second cat. See our BC cat listings filtered by "bonded pair" for the current inventory.
