Grey is a colour, not a breed
Nearly every grey cat in Nova Scotia rescue is a domestic shorthair or longhair with a solid blue-grey coat. Solid grey is a dilute of black, which is why it appears steadily rather than rarely and why so many grey shelter cats have no pedigree behind them at all.
The confusion worth settling early is the Russian Blue. A lot of grey shelter cats get listed as Russian Blue mixes because that is the familiar reference point, but a true Russian Blue is uncommon in rescue and has a specific short, dense, silver-tipped double coat with green eyes. If the pedigree matters to you, ask what the identification is based on. The honest answer is usually the coat colour and nothing else.
What the coat does and does not tell you
Very little about temperament, which is the useful part. Coat colour is not a reliable predictor of personality in cats. What does predict how a cat settles is its history, its age and how it behaved in the foster home, so spend your questions there.
Grey photographs better than solid black under shelter lighting, so these cats generally move faster. If one appeals, apply promptly rather than assuming it will still be listed next week.
Living with a grey cat in Nova Scotia
Ordinary domestic care. Indoor living is the Maritime norm for good reasons: coyote pressure across much of the province, rural roads, ticks through the warmer months, and Atlantic winters with Nor’easters that no cat should be out in.
A longhaired grey needs brushing several times a week; a shorthaired one needs little beyond a weekly once-over. Outside Halifax and Dartmouth the practical constraint is distance to a vet, so it is worth knowing where your nearest clinic and after-hours option are before you need them.
