The tailless build and the welfare concern to ask about

The Manx taillessness comes from the Manx gene, and it ranges from a fully tailless cat, called a rumpy, through to a short stub. The same gene that removes the tail can, in a minority of cats, cause Manx syndrome: spinal-cord problems related to spina bifida, along with bowel and bladder issues. Most affected cats show signs young, so an adult rescue Manx that has been healthy in foster care is usually past the worst risk, but it remains the single most important thing to ask about. Ask the foster and the rescue vet directly about the cat's litter-box habits, mobility, and any history of bowel or bladder trouble.
