Adopting a Domestic Longhair in Quebec
Domestic Longhair is not a breed. It is the catch-all for any long-coated cat of mixed ancestry, the feline equivalent of calling a dog a mixed breed, and together with the domestic shorthair it accounts for essentially all of Quebec rescue. If you want a long-coated cat here, this is where they are: waiting for a Maine Coon or a Persian to appear locally will usually mean waiting a long time for nothing.
The advantage of mixed ancestry is the same as it is in dogs. A wider gene pool means the inherited conditions concentrated in pedigree lines are less likely to double up, so these cats tend to be hardy and long-lived, commonly reaching twelve to eighteen years. What you give up is predictability of appearance, which matters less than most people expect once you have met the cat.
The coat is the only real difference
Long coats mat, and where they mat is predictable: behind the ears, in the armpits, along the belly and around the back end. Brushing a few times a week prevents nearly all of it, and a cat that has been handled from kittenhood usually accepts it readily. A badly matted cat needs a professional or a veterinary clip rather than scissors, because cat skin is thin and tears easily, and cutting mats out at home is a common cause of serious injury.
Two Quebec-specific notes. Long-coated cats shed heavily in spring as the winter undercoat comes out, so expect a period of much more brushing around March and April. And a long-coated cat with a matted or soiled back end is often telling you about arthritis or weight rather than about grooming, since a cat that cannot reach an area stops cleaning it. Raise it with a vet rather than only brushing it out.
