A brown cat in BC rescue is a brown tabby
When BC SPCA, VOKRA, Heart and Soul or Broken Promises list a brown cat, it is almost always a brown tabby: the warm, bronzed coat of a black-based tabby rather than a flat solid brown. A genuinely solid brown random-bred cat essentially never turns up in rescue, so treat brown and brown tabby as the same search and use tabby as well.
That matters because a brown tabby is the most numerous cat in Canadian rescue, so BC listings hold plenty of them at any given time. They are also frequently overlooked precisely because they are so common, which works in a patient adopter's favour.
The wild-type coat, and where true brown actually comes from
The brown tabby is the wild-type cat colour, the pattern closest to the ancestral wildcat and the most common coat in the world. The coat is built on black pigment, and the tabby, or agouti, gene bands each hair so the result reads warm brown rather than flat black. Patterns vary: mackerel with narrow stripes is the most common, then classic swirls and blotches, ticked hairs that look almost solid, and spotted.
True solid brown is a different story. Chocolate, and its dilute cinnamon, is a recessive gene confined almost entirely to pedigree breeds, with the Havana Brown as the classic example. The sable of a Burmese and the seal-brown points of a pointed cat are separate breed genetics again. None of these appear by chance in a random-bred BC litter, so a documented Havana Brown or Burmese is a breeder situation, not a shelter one.
A common cat should carry a common fee
Because a shelter brown cat is a common tabby and not a rare Havana Brown, it should never carry a rarity price. Standard domestic shorthair adoption fees are the norm across BC rescues, and anyone pricing a brown cat as unusual is selling a story rather than a scarce animal.
Coat colour does not drive personality, so there is no brown-cat temperament to expect and no sex-linked story the way there is with orange, tortoiseshell or calico. Since BC rescue leans heavily on foster homes, judge the individual cat and ask the foster how this particular one behaves at home.
