Adopting a tortie & tortoiseshell cat in Quebec

Tortoiseshell describes a coat mixing black and orange without the large white patches that would make it a calico. Almost every tortie is female, and the genetics are the same as the calico: both colour genes sit on the X chromosome, so it takes two of them to show both colours.

In Quebec listings this colouring is usually written as « chat écaille de tortue », which is worth knowing if you are searching a shelter's own site. Most of the cats on this page come from Montreal organizations, simply because they are the ones that describe a cat's markings in writing; several Quebec shelters list a cat with no physical description at all. If this list looks short, browse the full Quebec cat listings rather than concluding these cats are not available elsewhere in the province.

On "tortitude", and what is actually known

Torties have a reputation for being strong-willed, vocal and particular about handling, which owners call tortitude. Some small survey work reports owners describing tortoiseshell cats that way more often than other cats, but it measures owner perception rather than behaviour, and people who expect a trait tend to report it. Treat it as folklore worth knowing rather than a prediction about the cat in front of you.

What is not in dispute is the sex skew. Male torties occur, usually carrying an extra X chromosome, and they are rare and typically sterile. If a Quebec rescue lists a male tortie, that is genuinely unusual and worth asking about. Otherwise the useful questions are the ordinary ones: how the cat handles being picked up, how it greets visitors, and whether it has lived with other animals.

Where can I adopt a tortie & tortoiseshell cat near me in Quebec?▼
LocalPetFinder gathers adoptable tortie & tortoiseshell cats from the Quebec rescue organizations we cover, most of them Montreal-area, into one list. Listings refresh regularly and each profile links straight to the organization so you apply directly with them. Colour comes from each rescue's own description, so it is worth checking the full Quebec listings too.
What is the difference between a tortoiseshell and a calico?▼
The white. A tortoiseshell mixes black and orange throughout the coat with little or no white, while a calico has the same two colours in distinct patches on a substantially white base. Both are colour patterns rather than breeds, both are almost always female for the same genetic reason, and both appear across shorthaired and longhaired domestic cats. In Quebec listings you may see « chat écaille de tortue » for the first and « chat calicot » for the second.
Why do fewer cats show a colour than a breed?▼
Because colour is not a field most shelters fill in. We read it from the written description, so a cat whose write-up never mentions its markings will not appear on a colour page even though it may well be that colour. Several Quebec shelters publish no physical description at all, and a few publish no description whatsoever, so their cats are under-represented on these pages. A short list is a limit of the source listings, not a shortage of cats.
How much does it cost to adopt a Tortie & Tortoiseshell Cat in Quebec?▼
Adopting a Tortie & Tortoiseshell Cat in Quebec typically costs $100 to $300, and kittens usually carry a premium at $200 to $400. The exact fee varies by rescue, and older cats are often reduced. That fee is not a purchase price. It covers work already done on the cat: spay or neuter, vaccinations, deworming, microchip, and a basic vet workup, which would cost several hundred dollars more if you arranged it yourself after buying. Colour is not a breed, so there is no breeder route to this coat specifically, and the fee reflects the cat's age and the veterinary work already done rather than its markings. Ask the rescue what is included before you apply, since a few include extras like a starter bag of food or a first-month insurance trial.
