Bringing Home a Havanese (Calgary 2026)

The first week shapes the next decade with a Havanese. Daily brushing starts day 1, crate training starts day 1, and gradual alone-time training starts day 2. This is the day-1-to-day-30 protocol used by Calgary rescue foster homes for new Havanese adopters.

The first week is mostly four things

Coat care from day 1 (the silky double-coat mats in 48 hours if you skip brushing). Crate training from day 1 (housetraining and separation anxiety both lean on the crate). Gradual alone-time conditioning from day 2 (Havanese are velcro dogs by breed wiring). Pet insurance enrolled before the first vet visit (pre-existing exclusions are the most expensive Havanese mistake we see). Get those four right and the rest of the first month falls into place. The rescues we work with say week 1 to 3 is where Havanese adoptions either set up well or set up problems that take months to undo.

The 3-3-3 Settling Timeline

Days 1 to 3

Shutdown

Quiet, may refuse food, sleep heavily, follow you to every room. Many adopters mistake shutdown for “easy dog.” Day 4 to 7 the real personality starts emerging. Goal: low-pressure environment, minimal visitors, consistent feeding and potty schedule, crate available but no forced confinement, daily 5 minute brushing to build trust.

Weeks 1 to 3

Routine forming + velcro intensifies

Housetraining regresses even for adult rescues with a clean history. Separation anxiety often peaks at week 2 (especially when you return to work). Velcro behaviour intensifies. Goal: consistent schedule, gradual alone-time conditioning (start with 30 to 60 seconds, build to 30 minutes by week 2), force-free training, no dog parks yet.

Months 1 to 3

True personality

Real Havanese emerges by month 2 to 3. Resource guarding around food or beds may surface week 3 to 8 as comfort grows. Housetraining solidifies. Goal: maintain routine, address any behaviour with a force-free Calgary trainer, schedule the first professional grooming appointment around month 2, establish baseline vet relationship.

Havanese-Specific First Week Priorities

These are the breed-specific items that a generic new-dog checklist misses:

  • Brush daily from day 1. The silky double-coat mats in 48 hours without it. 5 to 10 minutes daily with slicker brush plus metal comb. Behind the ears, under front legs, and belly first.
  • Crate is not optional. Housetraining and separation anxiety both rely on the crate. Build positive crate association from day 1 with frozen Kongs inside.
  • Slow-feeder bowl from meal 1. Small breeds bolt food in 60 seconds and then regurgitate. Slow-feeder stretches meals to 5 to 10 minutes.
  • Alone-time conditioning from day 2. Velcro is breed wiring, not a behaviour problem. Start with 30 to 60 second absences while the dog is busy. Build to 4 to 6 hours by week 4.
  • Plan a 4 to 12 week housetraining reset. Even fully housetrained adult rescues regress on arrival. Every 2 hours outside, high-value reward, no punishment, enzyme cleaner.
  • Insurance before the vet visit. Pre-existing exclusions lock out coverage for any condition noted at the first exam. The luxating patella surgery the breed is prone to runs $2,500 to $5,000 in Calgary, so insurance pays for itself.
  • No dog parks for 4 to 8 weeks. Overwhelm plus disease risk during decompression. Small breeds also face injury risk from larger dogs at off-leash parks.
  • Winter coat plus booties below -5C. Long silky coat looks warm but the body underneath chills fast. Calgary sidewalk salt cracks Havanese paw pads within a week without protection.

First vet visit within 7 days of arrival. Critical: enroll pet insurance BEFORE the visit so nothing noted becomes a pre-existing condition exclusion.

First Month Vet Schedule

Pet insurance enrollment (BEFORE first vet visit)

Day 1 priority. Anything documented at the wellness exam becomes a pre-existing exclusion if you enroll afterward. Calgary plans we see Havanese owners pick: Trupanion, Pets Plus Us, Petsecure, Embrace. Quotes $50 to $90 per month for adult Havanese. The luxating patella surgery the breed is prone to costs $2,500 to $5,000, which is why insurance from day 1 is the standard recommendation.

Wellness exam within 7 days

Calgary vet $80 to $150. Baseline weight, body condition, knee palpation (the main Havanese surgical concern), eye exam for tear staining and cataracts, dental check, ear screen for moisture buildup under the long ears. Ask your vet to note coat condition for the file in case skin issues appear later.

Vaccination review

If vaccinations are not current, schedule boosters ($100 to $200). Most rescue Havanese arrive fully vaccinated; verify the record. Discuss the leptospirosis vaccine if your Havanese will visit Calgary off-leash parks or natural water.

Optional: Senior bloodwork

For rescue Havanese aged 8 and up, request a senior blood panel ($150 to $300). Sets a baseline for kidney, liver, and thyroid values. Havanese live 14 to 16 years, so a baseline at adoption gives the vet years of comparison data for catching subtle changes early.

Schedule professional groomer (month 2)

Book a Calgary groomer appointment for around week 6 to 8. Cost $55 to $85 per session. Most Calgary Havanese owners use a puppy-cut style (1 to 2 inches all over) for easier home maintenance between appointments every 4 to 6 weeks.

The Housetraining Reset (Why Adult Rescues Need It)

Havanese have a hard-earned reputation as one of the harder small breeds to housetrain. The owner community calls them “stubborn but smart” because they understand the rules and choose when to follow them. Add the stress of a new home, and even a foster-rated “fully housetrained” adult rescue Havanese will have accidents in week 1. This is normal. Plan a 4 to 12 week reset protocol:

  • Take the dog outside every 2 hours during waking hours for the first two weeks.
  • Always go out immediately after eating, sleeping, drinking, or playing.
  • Use a consistent cue word every time (“potty,” “go pee”).
  • Reward immediately after success with a high-value treat (within 3 seconds of finishing).
  • Crate when unsupervised. The crate is the single best housetraining tool for the breed.
  • Never punish accidents. Punishment teaches the dog to hide elimination, which makes the problem worse.
  • Clean accidents with an enzyme cleaner (Nature's Miracle, Rocco & Roxie). Regular cleaners leave a scent the dog returns to.
  • Calgary winter complicates the reset. Shovel a small bare patch on the lawn during deep snow stretches. Indoor pee pads are a reasonable backup during -25C cold snaps. Havanese refuse deep snow and you will not win that fight.

Most adult rescue Havanese reach reliable housetraining in 4 to 8 weeks with this protocol. Some take 12 weeks. A few rescue Havanese from commercial breeding closures take 4 to 6 months because they were never taught the rules. Slow progress is normal. Our Havanese house training guide covers the full reset protocol week by week.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do I need before bringing one home?

12 essentials: back-clip harness, wire crate, slicker brush plus metal comb, slow-feeder bowl, dental kit, ceramic bowls, 6 ft leash, Kong and puzzle toys, pet insurance enrolled, vet appointment booked within 7 days. Setup $345 to $680 plus first month insurance and vet.

3-3-3 rule?

Days 1 to 3 shutdown. Weeks 1 to 3 routine forming and velcro intensifies. Months 1 to 3 true personality. Use the first 3 months as a non-decision window.

Do I have to brush daily from day 1?

Yes. The silky double-coat mats in 48 hours without it. Plan 5 to 10 minutes daily with a slicker brush plus a metal comb. Most rescue Havanese arrive with some existing matting.

First-month vet schedule?

Pet insurance enrolled BEFORE the wellness exam (pre-existing trap), wellness within 7 days, vaccination review, optional senior bloodwork for rescues 8 and up, groomer booked for week 6 to 8.

How long until they adjust?

Meaningful adjustment by week 3 to 4. Full settling by month 2 to 3. Velcro starts within days. Some commercial-breeding survivors take 6 to 12 months.

Why are accidents happening even though the foster said house trained?

A new home resets the map. Plan a 4 to 12 week reset: out every 2 hours, after eat/sleep/play, cue word, reward in 3 seconds, crate when unsupervised, enzyme cleaner, no punishment.

How do I prevent separation anxiety?

Start gradual alone-time conditioning from day 2. 30 to 60 seconds in a different room while the dog has a frozen Kong. Build to 5 minutes by week 1, 30 minutes by week 2, several hours by week 4. Avoid the trap of taking week 1 off and disappearing for 9 hours on Monday of week 2.

Calgary winter gear?

Fleece or insulated coat below -5C. 4-pack of booties for salt protection November to April. Paw wax as booty backup. Limit walks below -15C to 10 minutes; skip below -25C.
