About Abyssinian Cats in Calgary

Abyssinians are slender, athletic cats with a distinctive ticked or agouti coat where each hair carries bands of colour. They are extremely active, curious, playful, and endlessly into everything, which has earned them the nickname "the clown of the cat world." This is not a placid lap cat. An Abyssinian needs vertical space, climbing opportunities, daily interactive play, and company, or it will find its own (often inconvenient) entertainment.

Because of those needs, Abyssinians sometimes end up in rescue when owners underestimate how much enrichment they require. They thrive in homes with tall cat trees, puzzle feeders, rotating toys, and ideally another active cat or a cat-friendly dog for company. They suit busy, engaged households that want a genuinely interactive, almost dog-like companion rather than a quiet decoration.

Purebred Abyssinians are uncommon in Calgary rescues since most are bought from breeders, but Aby mixes and ticked-coat domestic shorthairs appear province-wide. Ask the foster about health history, including progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), pyruvate kinase deficiency, gingivitis and periodontal disease, and renal amyloidosis. Listings update regularly from MEOW Foundation, Calgary Humane Society, AARCS, and other Calgary cat rescues. Adoption fees commonly range from $100 to $250 and typically include spay/neuter, vaccinations, and FIV/FeLV testing.

Abyssinian Adoption FAQ

Are Abyssinians good lap cats?

Generally no. Abyssinians are among the most active and athletic cat breeds, and most would rather climb, explore, and play than sit still on a lap. They are affectionate and bond closely with their people, but they show it through engagement and companionship rather than long cuddle sessions. If you want a calm lap cat, a Ragdoll or Persian is a better fit.

Do Abyssinians need a lot of attention?

Yes. Abyssinians are highly intelligent and energetic, and they get bored and destructive without enough stimulation. Plan for daily interactive play, plenty of vertical climbing space, puzzle feeders, and ideally a second active pet for company. They do best in homes that can keep them busy.

Are Abyssinians hypoallergenic?

No, Abyssinians are not hypoallergenic. Their short coat sheds less than a longhaired breed, but they still produce the Fel d 1 protein that triggers most cat allergies. People with allergies should not assume an Aby is safe and should test their reaction before adopting.

Are Abyssinians good with other pets?

Yes, Abyssinians usually do well with other active cats and cat-friendly dogs, and many actually prefer having a playmate. Their high energy can overwhelm a quiet senior cat, so match energy levels and use slow, supervised introductions.
