About Manx Cats in Calgary

Manx cats are round, robust, and best known for their taillessness, which ranges from fully tailless (called a "rumpy") to a small stub. They are playful, intelligent, and often described as dog-like: some play fetch, some are fascinated by water, and many are good hunters. They are affectionate and loyal, bonding closely with their families. A longhaired variety exists as well.

There is an honest welfare consideration. The taillessness comes from the Manx gene, and the same gene can cause "Manx syndrome" in a minority of cats, a group of spinal-cord and spina-bifida problems that can also affect bowel and bladder control. Most affected cats show signs young. If you adopt a Manx, ask the foster directly about the cat's litter-box habits, mobility, and any history of incontinence, and have a vet review the spine.

Purebred Manx are uncommon in Calgary rescues since most are bought from breeders, but tailless and stub-tailed cats and Manx mixes do appear province-wide. Search broadly and ask the foster about the individual cat's health. Listings update regularly from MEOW Foundation, Calgary Humane Society, AARCS, and other Calgary cat rescues. Adoption fees commonly range from $100 to $250 and typically include spay/neuter, vaccinations, and FIV/FeLV testing.

Manx Adoption FAQ

Why do Manx cats have no tail?

The taillessness comes from a natural genetic mutation called the Manx gene, which shortens or eliminates the tail. The length varies from fully tailless ("rumpy") to a short stub. It is a defining breed trait, not the result of docking or injury.

Is Manx syndrome something to worry about?

It can be. The same gene that causes taillessness can cause "Manx syndrome" in a minority of cats, involving spinal-cord and spina-bifida problems that may affect bowel and bladder control. Most affected cats show signs while young. Before adopting, ask the foster about the cat's litter-box habits and mobility, and have a vet examine the spine.

Are Manx cats really dog-like?

Many are. Manx are playful, loyal, and intelligent, and they often retrieve toys, follow their people around, and take an unusual interest in water. They bond strongly with their families and can be quite interactive, which is part of why owners describe them as dog-like.

Are Manx cats hypoallergenic?

No, Manx cats are not hypoallergenic. Whether short or longhaired, they produce the Fel d 1 protein that triggers most cat allergies. If allergies are a concern, a Russian Blue or Sphynx is better tolerated, and you should always test your reaction before adopting.
