The American Shorthair is a recognised breed (CFA, TICA), not to be confused with the broader "Domestic Shorthair" descriptive term. American Shorthairs are sturdy, medium-sized cats (8 to 15 pounds) known for an easygoing behaviour, good health, and a long lifespan (15 to 20 years on average). They get along well with children, other cats, and dog-friendly households, which makes them a popular family-friendly choice.
Purebred American Shorthairs are rare in Calgary rescues. Most listings labelled "American Shorthair" in Calgary shelters are actually Domestic Shorthairs (mixed-ancestry cats with similar appearance). Both share the easygoing temperament and short, low-maintenance coat. If you want a confirmed pedigreed American Shorthair, expect a wait, or work with breed-specific networks. For most adopters, a Domestic Shorthair with American-Shorthair-style traits is an excellent and more available alternative.
Listings update regularly from MEOW Foundation, Calgary Humane Society, AARCS, Pawsitive Match, BARCS, and other Calgary cat rescues. Adoption fees commonly range from $100 to $250 and typically include spay/neuter, vaccinations, microchip, and FIV/FeLV testing.
American Shorthair Adoption FAQ
What is the difference between American Shorthair and Domestic Shorthair?
American Shorthair is a recognised pedigreed breed with documented ancestry, breed-specific traits, and breed-club registration (CFA, TICA). Domestic Shorthair is a descriptive category for any short-coated cat of mixed or unknown ancestry. Most "American Shorthair" listings in Calgary rescues are actually Domestic Shorthairs that resemble the breed. Both can be wonderful family pets.
Are American Shorthairs good family cats?
Yes, American Shorthairs are well-known for an easygoing, friendly behaviour. They typically do well with children, get along with other cats, and tolerate cat-friendly dogs. They are not as demanding as Siamese or as needy as Ragdolls. They make a balanced family-cat choice.
How long do American Shorthairs live?
American Shorthairs are generally healthy and long-lived: 15 to 20 years is typical with good care. They can be prone to hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) and obesity. Routine annual vet checkups, dental care, and weight management support their long lifespan.
How much grooming does an American Shorthair need?
Minimal. American Shorthairs have a short, dense coat that needs only weekly brushing in most seasons, with a slight increase during spring shedding. They do not require professional grooming and are one of the easier-coat breeds for Calgary winters.
