About Munchkin Cats in Calgary

Munchkin cats are best known for their short legs, the result of an autosomal-dominant gene. They are playful, friendly, sociable, and confident, keeping a kitten-like energy well into adulthood, and they generally do well with families and other pets. Most Munchkins move, run, and play normally despite their short stature, and a longhaired variety exists alongside the shorthaired one.

Be aware that the Munchkin is a controversial breed. It is not recognised by all cat registries, and some welfare bodies object to deliberately breeding for short legs because of potential mobility and spinal concerns. The genetics are genuinely debated. If you adopt a Munchkin or a short-legged cat, ask the foster about the cat's mobility, how it jumps and moves, and any spinal or joint issues, and have a vet weigh in.

Purebred Munchkins are uncommon in Calgary rescues since most are bought from breeders, and short-legged cats more often arrive through owner surrenders or as mixes. Search broadly province-wide and ask the foster about the individual cat's health and movement. Listings update regularly from MEOW Foundation, Calgary Humane Society, AARCS, and other Calgary cat rescues. Adoption fees commonly range from $100 to $250 and typically include spay/neuter, vaccinations, and FIV/FeLV testing.

Munchkin Adoption FAQ

Can Munchkin cats jump and play normally?

Most can. Despite their short legs, the majority of Munchkins run, climb, and play much like any other cat, though they may jump a little lower. Because the breed is debated and short legs can raise mobility and spinal questions, ask the foster how the cat moves and jumps, and have a vet assess it before adopting.

Why is the Munchkin breed controversial?

The short legs come from a dominant gene, and some cat registries do not recognise the breed while some welfare bodies object to deliberately breeding for that trait over concerns about mobility and spinal health. The genetics are genuinely debated. We share this so you can ask the right questions and make an informed, honest decision.

Are Munchkin cats good with kids and other pets?

Yes. Munchkins are playful, friendly, sociable, and confident, with a kitten-like energy that lasts into adulthood, which suits families with respectful children and other pets. Use slow, supervised introductions as you would with any new cat.

Are Munchkin cats hypoallergenic?

No, Munchkin cats are not hypoallergenic. Whether short or longhaired, they produce the Fel d 1 protein that triggers most cat allergies. If allergies are a concern, a Russian Blue or Sphynx is better tolerated, and you should always test your reaction before adopting.
