About Devon Rex Cats in Calgary

Devon Rex cats are small to medium pixies with big ears, an elf-like face, and a soft, curly or wavy "rex" coat that is sparse and fine. They are very active, mischievous, and people-obsessed: a Devon Rex will perch on your shoulder, burrow into laps and blankets, and seek out every warm spot in the house. They are often described as "a monkey in a catsuit" for good reason.

That thin coat has a Calgary-specific implication. Devon Rex cats feel the cold easily and constantly hunt for warmth, so they gravitate to sunbeams, laps, and heated beds, which matters in our long, cold winters. They are strictly indoor cats here. Many adopters provide a heated cat bed or a warm window perch to keep them comfortable.

On allergies, be honest: the Devon Rex is lower-allergen, not allergy-proof. The sparse coat sheds less and many mild allergy sufferers tolerate them better, but no cat is truly hypoallergenic, so test your reaction before committing. Devon Rex are rare in Calgary rescues since most are bought from breeders, so search province-wide and ask the foster about health history, including hereditary myopathy and spasticity (in older lines), patellar luxation, HCM (a heart condition), and oily skin or Malassezia that needs occasional bathing and ear cleaning. Listings update regularly from MEOW Foundation, Calgary Humane Society, AARCS, and other Calgary cat rescues. Adoption fees commonly range from $100 to $250 and typically include spay/neuter, vaccinations, and FIV/FeLV testing.

Devon Rex Adoption FAQ

Are Devon Rex cats hypoallergenic?

No cat is truly hypoallergenic, and the Devon Rex is no exception, but it is lower-allergen than most breeds. Its sparse, fine coat sheds less, and many people with mild cat allergies tolerate a Devon Rex better. Severe allergy sufferers should spend extended time with one before adopting, because they still produce the Fel d 1 protein.

Do Devon Rex cats get cold easily?

Yes. The thin, sparse coat means Devon Rex cats lose heat quickly and constantly seek warmth, gravitating to laps, sunbeams, and heated beds. In a cold-winter city like Calgary, keep them strictly indoors and consider a heated cat bed or a warm window perch to keep them comfortable.

How much grooming does a Devon Rex need?

Brushing needs are minimal because the coat is so short and delicate that vigorous brushing can damage it. The bigger task is skin and ear care: Devon Rex can develop oily skin and Malassezia buildup, so they often need occasional gentle bathing and regular ear cleaning. Ask the foster what routine the cat is used to.

Are Devon Rex cats good with families?

Yes. Devon Rex are friendly, playful, and intensely people-oriented, which suits active families with respectful children and other pets. They love being involved in everything and rarely want to be left alone, so they do best in homes where someone is around much of the time.
