Adopting a dog in Markham
Markham is York Region's largest city, home to about 338,000 people between Highway 404 and the Rouge. The City of Markham runs the Markham Animal Adoption and Education Centre with the Ontario SPCA, at the Thornhill Community Centre on Bayview Avenue. It opens on scheduled adoption-event days rather than every day, so check the City of Markham website for the next date before you go.

Getting to a meet-and-greet from Markham
Ask where the dog is fostered before you plan the trip. Foster-based rescues such as Full Circle and Save Our Scruff place dogs in private homes across the GTA, and a dog listed under a Toronto rescue may be living in Markham, Richmond Hill or Pickering right now. The meeting happens wherever the foster is.
The physical shelters need a visit. Stouffville is a short drive up Highway 48 or the 404 from most of Markham. Dog Tales in King is about 40 minutes west across the top of York Region, and the downtown Toronto shelters are 40 minutes to an hour by car, or a ride on the Stouffville GO line to Union.
What the adoption fee covers
An adoption fee is not a price tag on the dog. It recovers part of the veterinary work the rescue has already paid for, and it is usually a fraction of what that work would cost you at a clinic. Adoptable dogs generally go home spayed or neutered, vaccinated and microchipped, and the fee often reflects deworming and a health check too.
Fees vary by rescue and by the age of the dog, and puppies usually cost more than adults, so confirm the exact figure and what it includes on the listing before you apply. A fully vetted rescue dog costs far less than a dog bought from a classified ad that you then have to vet yourself.
The first two weeks
A rescue dog needs time to decompress, and the 3-3-3 guide is a useful frame: about three days to feel safe, three weeks to learn the routine, three months to feel at home. Judge the dog at three months, not three days.
Keep early walks short and close to home while the dog learns your street. Save the Rouge National Urban Park trails and Milne Dam Conservation Park for once it has settled and recall is reliable, and keep it leashed there, since coyotes use the Rouge valley. Find your emergency vet before you need one: we have not yet verified the nearest 24-hour hospital to Markham, so ask your regular vet which one they refer to.

A search for puppies in Markham returns page after page of classified ads at prices that would cover a year of vet bills, and many of those sellers are backyard breeders or resellers with no health guarantee.
