The breed was created to combine the Bernese's family-friendly temperament with the Poodle's longer lifespan + low-shed coat potential — solving the two biggest objections to the Bernese Mountain Dog (early death from cancer and heavy shedding). Adults range from 25 to 90 lbs depending on which Poodle size was used: Tiny (10-24 lbs, Toy Poodle), Mini (25-49 lbs, Mini Poodle), Standard (50-90 lbs, Standard Poodle). Lifespan averages 12 to 15 years, significantly longer than the purebred Bernese.

The breed is consistently described as gentle, affectionate, intelligent, and family-bonded. Bernedoodles typically inherit the Bernese's patient family-dog disposition with more energy and trainability from the Poodle line. Calgary households drawn to Bernedoodles often want a Bernese personality without the 6-8 year average lifespan tragedy of the purebred. Standard Bernedoodles need 60-75 minutes of daily exercise; Mini Bernedoodles do well with 45-60 minutes. Generation labels (F1, F1B, F2, multigen) work the same as in other doodles: F1B and multigen produce the most reliably low-shed coats.
