The Weimaraner, nicknamed the "grey ghost" for its striking silver coat and pale eyes, is a powerful, fast, intensely loyal hunting dog. Weims are the definition of a velcro dog: they want to be with their person constantly and can struggle with being left alone. They are exceptionally athletic, highly intelligent, and far more dog than most first-time owners expect. With the right outlet for their energy and a household that is home a lot, they are devoted, fun, and affectionate companions.
Weimaraners land in rescue more often than their numbers would suggest, almost always because of a mismatch between the breed's needs and the owner's lifestyle. Separation anxiety is the big one. A Weim left alone too long or under-exercised can become destructive, panicky, and very vocal. Others come in because a family did not anticipate the relentless energy of a working gun dog. Purebred Weims are uncommon in Alberta rescue, and Weimaraner mixes (often crossed with Labs, pointers, or hounds) appear more frequently than purebreds.
We aggregate adoptable dogs from 15+ Calgary-area rescues, including Calgary Humane Society, AARCS, BARCS, ARF Alberta, and Cochrane Humane Society. Listings are updated regularly. Purebred Weimaraners are genuinely scarce here, so do not be surprised if you do not see one on a given day. If you want one, set up an adoption alert and browse our broader large-dog and sporting-dog listings, where Weim mixes are more likely to surface.

Where can I adopt a Weimaraner in Calgary?
Check Calgary Humane Society, AARCS, BARCS, ARF Alberta, and Cochrane Humane Society, all aggregated here. Purebred Weimaraners are uncommon in Alberta rescue, so Weim mixes appear more often than purebreds. Because they get adopted fast when they do come through, setting up an adoption alert is the most reliable way to find one.
Do Weimaraners have separation anxiety?
Many do. The breed is famously velcro-attached to its people and can develop genuine separation anxiety if left alone for long stretches, especially without enough exercise. A Weim is best suited to a household where someone is home much of the day or where the dog can come along. Crate training and gradual alone-time conditioning help a lot.
Are Weimaraners good first dogs?
Usually not. They are large, fast, strong, and demand serious daily exercise plus near-constant companionship. First-time owners often underestimate the breed and end up overwhelmed, which is part of why Weims show up in rescue. Experienced, active owners who are home a lot tend to do best with them.
How much does it cost to adopt a Weimaraner in Calgary?
Most Calgary-area rescues charge adoption fees in the $300 to $700 range, typically including spay or neuter, vaccinations, and a microchip. The fee varies with the dog's age and medical needs. Adopting costs far less than buying a Weimaraner from a breeder, and you take a dog already in the system.
