About Bloodhounds in Calgary
The Bloodhound has the most sensitive nose of any dog and a legal reputation to match: its tracking evidence has been accepted in courts. Everything else about the breed follows from that nose, including the long ears that sweep scent upward and the loose facial skin that traps it.
Adults run 80 to 110 lbs and pull hard. A Bloodhound on a trail is effectively a different animal from the one on your sofa, and recall is not realistic, so this is a harness-and-long-line breed. Drool, shedding and a distinctive houndy smell come with the package.
Indoors they are famously gentle and tolerant, which is why they suit families that can handle the size. They are uncommon in Canadian rescue. If a Bloodhound or Bloodhound cross appears, expect it to be adopted quickly, and set an alert rather than waiting.
