About Chesapeake Bay Retrievers in Calgary
The Chesapeake Bay Retriever was bred to retrieve waterfowl from cold, rough water on the American east coast, and its oily, slightly wavy double coat is purpose-built for exactly that. It is the toughest of the common retrievers and the least biddable.
The important thing for an adopter is that a Chessie is not a Labrador in a different colour. The breed tends to be more reserved with strangers, more protective of its people and property, and more inclined to argue with a handler it does not respect. Retriever experience genuinely helps.
Adults run 55 to 80 lbs and need real physical work, ideally including swimming. They are uncommon in Canadian rescue and most listings are crosses, often with Labrador. Ask the foster how the dog behaves with strangers and other dogs, because that is where Chessie temperament differs most from what people expect.
